Episode 91: Cake, Anyone?
Today on In Time, Peter and Robyne demonstrate Birthday Cake Breathing, a guided method for reflective breaths that leverages the neuroscience behind the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. Plus, how interactions are influenced by “the frame,” and using music to better process emotions.
Today’s surprise question:
You have two minutes between two things you’re doing, and you need to get yourself restored in that time. What would be a practice you would go through to quickly accomplish that?

Show Notes
We cover many topics in this episode, including:
- The way you frame interactions can change the energy of that interaction - for example, Peter wanted to frame his and Robyne’s recordings of the podcast to be “sneaking off for a coffee catch-up in the middle of a busy day” - a restorative moment to drop into and reconnect
- Peter demonstrates ‘Birthday Cake Breathing’, a guided reflection that teaches people how to take deep mindful breaths
- Robyne discusses the neuroscience behind why Birthday Cake Breathing is effective:
- Upon doing a deep inhalation and exhalation, our bodies switch between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system because we can only do that when we feel safe
- The visualization quiets the mental chatter in your head
- Visualizing seeing your loved ones surrounding you gives you a sense that you are supported, and activates a dose of oxytocin - the love hormone - because we are feeling happiness and fondness
- The musical aspect of guitar accompanying the guided reflection also acts as a shortcut to help you drop into your heart center where we process emotions
Having a moment to shift our perspective and set a new intention is so powerful. – Robyne
