Episode 90: Carrying the Weight
This week on In Time, Peter and Robyne talk about living with melancholy — and how the weight of sadness can help us better understand and appreciate our capacity for joy. Plus, how “what we don’t know we don’t know” can prime us for greater appreciation.
Today’s surprise question:
What is one thing you can do in the next 60 minutes that could give you a bit of happiness?

Show Notes
We cover many topics in this episode, including:
- Peter describes a John Mayer event he got to play at, as well as what it was like touring in the earlier days of his career
- When you live with melancholy, you more readily recognize joy, positivity and light
- Decide who the people are that make you happy, and make effort to spend more time with them
- Happiness is often a choice of what we lean into and surround ourselves with
- Robyne discusses how she regularly carries a heavy melancholy, but is able to be happy because this baseline of heaviness allows her to truly appreciate small joys that make themselves present in her life
- Peter discusses how this is similar to how when he was at his peak of suffering from lyme disease - because of his depth of experience, even a simple joy like being able to walk was overwhelmingly appreciated
- It is possible for you to be 'unconsciously incompetent' (a step below consciously competent), where there are things you don’t even know you don’t know
It’s so much easier when we can show up in the messy middle and absolve ourselves from having to be perfect or trying to have everything figured out. – Robyne
