Episode 103: The Strange Gift of Fear

On today’s In Time, Peter and Robyne discuss the narrow boundary between excitement and fear, and how these adrenaline-boosting experiences can reset our bodies’ nervous systems and refresh our perspectives. Plus, how “emergent design” can create a shared space of play for speakers and their audiences.

Today’s surprise question:
What was one of the songs played at The Conscious Leaders Quest that made Peter jump up and start dancing?

Show Notes

We cover many topics in this episode, including:
- Robyne discusses a major event she spoke at, and how her friends visited all the way from Canada just to support her
- Robyne discusses after the event how she and her friends that came to support her were offered an opportunity to drive Ferraris in the desert
- Robyne explains that the adrenaline from driving these fast cars causes your body’s nervous system to reset back to factory default settings, giving perspective to what real fear feels like, rather than little microaggressions that happen throughout our day
- By using an ‘Emergent Design’ approach to presentations, it allows for spontaneity, feedback, and continuous learning, playing, and adjusting the presentation as emerging needs arise
- Many studies point out learning in conjunction with play increases the absorption of knowledge

Whatever it is that you’re doing, how can you just layer in those little moments—those little joy snacks—and find the unexpected and the play? – Peter
