Episode 7: Destigmatizing Discipline

On today’s episode, Peter and Robyne talk about how we can imagine a new idea of discipline: rather than being punitive, how can we combine motivation with discipline to help us choose behaviours that will increase our likelihood of success? Plus, symbolic transitions, walking meditation, and how to request meaningful change without a lecture.

Today’s surprise question:
What meal or food do you associate with good feelings?

Show Notes

We cover many topics in this episode, including:
- Use ‘change’, or symbolic transitions like ‘the first of the month’ or ‘a birthday’ as an opportunities for a fresh start to reassess your needs and how they can effectively be met
- Find your ‘morning routine’ and allow yourself to settle in for the day - something for your head, something for your heart, and something for your body
- When communicating family matters, particularly with teens, it’s best to keep it informal and to the point - long lectures won’t get you the results you’re after
- Motivation helps you generate ideas, but discipline gets those ideas accomplished. And discipline isn’t meant to be punitive - discipline is just choosing behaviours that will increase the likelihood of success
- Try a ‘walking meditation’ - ask “What am I seeing?”, “What am I hearing?”, “What am I feeling?”, and just make a note of it as a gentle way to awaken your awareness of what’s around you
- When feeling anxious, taking the time to alter the physical space you’re in, i.e. ‘setting the stage’, can help you break that trajectory - change the lighting, the sound, clear the clutter, etc.

Motivation is meant to give us that curiosity and excitement to start, but discipline is what’s going to carry you through. – Robyne
