Episode 10: Getting Into It

Peter and Robyne discuss setting and respecting emotional boundaries, and how we don’t always feel ready to “get into it.” At times, this can help us to feel safe — but it can also deter the vulnerability which leads to emotional intimacy.

Today’s surprise questions:
What was the last song that stopped you and caught your attention? Why?
When you think of the word ‘love’, where on your body do you experience that?

Show Notes

We cover many topics in this episode, including:
- ‘How is it going?’ can be a very complex question, and it’s ok to have a stock response for when you don’t want to get into it
- Allow people to have a simple response to the ‘How is it going?’ question, but leave space for them to respond in more depth if they’d like to, or when they’re ready to
- There can be a self-conscious fear of oversharing when communicating your response to ‘How’s it going?’ You don’t have to make yourself ‘easy to love’, because for the right people, you’re just enough
- Our ability to quickly pull ourselves out of extreme sorrow when having to present a collected version of ourselves in front of people is a defense mechanism we’ve developed to protect our emotional vulnerabilities
- It’s ok to define emotional boundaries when someone is trying to engage you in a way you are not comfortable with

Boundaries are a system of yeses and nos that are going to enhance your life. It’s not keeping people out; it’s just being really strategic in terms of what you’re showing up for and what has access to you. Sometimes as a service to ourselves, we need to put in some emotional boundaries. – Robyne
