Episode 15: Making Space for Meaning

Peter and Robyne discuss the benefits of creating spaces in our daily lives that have designated functions to ease our cognitive load of decision-making of what to do when entering said space. They also touch on the importance of creating space for decompression in our everyday lives and not saving it exclusively for vacations. Plus, they offer separating the ‘meaning’ from the ‘outcome’ as a useful tool in the pursuit of a meaningful and fulfilling life.

Today’s surprise question:
What is the physical space that when entering you feel the most ‘you’?

Show Notes

We cover many topics in this episode, including:
- Creating spaces that have a particular function can ease the cognitive load of decision making as to what to do when entering that space
- Vacations are useful for a break to decompress from the stresses of life, but until we learn to create moments of decompression in our everyday lives, we will eventually feel depleted again upon return
- Being able to find joy in the smallest of moments throughout the day is the best way to get through busy times feeling fulfilled
- Our job in life is to find what makes our lives meaningful, and keep doing those things
- As humans, we are natural ‘meaning makers’, so taking a bolder approach to creating meaning in our lives is likely to serve us well
- Separate the ‘meaning’ from the ‘outcome’ - happiness usually comes from the pursuit of something meaningful, rather than achieving that goal

Our life is a series of these dots in isolation, and then we as the meaning-makers connect the dots. – Robyne
