Episode 16: Managing Feedback with Grace

Peter and Robyne discuss “the power of coping ahead” of receiving criticism and how to set ourselves up for success to avoid managing it in a reactive way. They also highlight how it better serves us to focus on the lesson within feedback rather than the offense (even though it’s much easier to pick up on the latter), and to ask ourselves, “who am I getting this from?” before wholly accepting criticism. Finally, when on the giving end, they propose checking in with the person before giving feedback to establish whether they are in the right mindframe to accept it.

Today’s surprise questions:
Picture yourself in a beautiful location and, through magic, you have anything you desire at your disposal - what would you do with 15 mins there?
What piece of feedback do you need to hear right now?

Show Notes

We cover many topics in this episode, including:
- Sometimes it’s better to jump in and do something you’re passionate about while you are in the process of actualizing it, rather than being overcautious and preparing the spontaneity out of it
- ’The Power of Coping Ahead of Time' - often we manage things like criticism afterwards in a reactive way, but think about setting yourself up for success by preparing how you will cope ahead of time
- It’s easier to pick up the offense in feedback than it is to pick up the lesson - aim for the latter
- ‘Connect before you correct’ - check in with the person before giving feedback to establish whether they are in the right mindframe to accept it
- Before accepting criticism, ask “Who am I getting this from?” - anyone can have an opinion - what you want is counsel and mentorship
- When dealing with a daunting project, don’t be afraid to find people who are better at specific tasks and delegate some of the work to them to get the project off its feet

We deny others the ability to contribute and to be part of something by trying to do it all ourselves. – Peter
