Episode 118: When The Game is Over
To kick off a brand new season of In Time, Peter and Robyne explore how the skills we learn through sports can help us long after the final buzzer. How do “bad calls” mirror life’s challenges? Can attitude improve our odds? And, perhaps most importantly, how can we find integrity in the face of defeat? Plus, Robyne’s run-in with an umpire.

Show Notes
We cover many topics in this episode, including:
- If you’re going to a new city, seeing a new show, etc., do some research on it before going - you will enjoy your experience so much more
- Peter expresses that ‘sports’ feels like the final frontier of human experience amongst other scripted entertainment and reality TV, and that the act of playing sports doesn’t necessarily translate to real life skills, but the soft skills you learn do
- One of the most useful skills learned through sports is learning how to lose gracefully - best way to do that is to know when the game is over, that you gave it all you had to give - if you lose knowing this, you can feel good about your performance - it just wasn’t your time
- Bad calls by a ref are part of the sport, so it also teaches you to accept that sometimes no matter how perfectly you do something, you may not always get the results you feel you deserve
- What’s most important is that when you lay your head on the pillow at night, that you can be with yourself, in your sense of self, integrity, and knowing you did your best
- If you walk into the game thinking you don’t have a chance of winning, you will have much less a chance of winning - you’ve got to mentally prepare yourself
- The best thing a parent can say to a kid after the game is to tell them how much you love watching them do their sport
My favourite thing on Earth is being in real, authentic communication and connection with other humans. – Peter
