Episode 86: Back At It

On today’s In Time, Peter and Robyne explore the temptation to push ourselves back into work after a period of recovery. How can we take time to heal in a world that can often feel like it is demanding so much of us? And when the time comes to begin again, how can we acknowledge and address our psychological and physiological responses (like anxiety, fear, and overwhelm)?

Show Notes

We cover many topics in this episode, including:
- We often “jump back in” too soon after recovering from illness
- Peter references the late Oliver Schroer’s “bubbles of calmness”, finding moments of calm and peace in the midst of more overwhelming situations
- Triggers (that throw us into a state of overwhelm) vs. predictive signals (that our nervous system uses to protect us, reminding us how resourced we are in reference to the scope of what we’re trying to undertake)
- Anxiety and worry is literally our brain trying to get us to pause and look at the big picture. But if we ignore it and refuse to give it audience, it becomes the creeping feeling that can lead to overwhelm. To soothe this, we need to pause and to say: okay, so we're about to take on something that right now feels really hard and really difficult, but I know I can do hard things. And then your worry and your anxiety says, okay, my job is done.
- When you’re dealing with more, do less. This is when we simplify.
- Nature can allow us to regulate and tap into our bodies.

When you’re dealing with more, do less. – Robyne
