Episode 112: Common Denominators & Compounded Stress

Peter and Robyne talk about stress: when we’re likely to feel it, strategies to navigate it, and how we can simplify our response to avoid making challenges more complicated than they need to be. Plus, how a lens of kindness can help you process anger, disappointment, and frustration.

Today’s surprise question:
What is your experience of reacclimating after an extended busy or challenging period? Is there anything you find helpful to ease from “the hustle” to quieter times?

Show Notes

We cover many topics in this episode, including:
- With regards to your energy, you can always pour from an empty cup, as long as you give yourself time afterwards to recover
- It’s ok to be mad, disappointed, frustrated - as long as we frame it in a kind way
- When things get overwhelming, sometimes you’ve gotta say ‘I’m not evolved enough to handle this sort of situation in a healthy way”, and just move on without regret
- It’s invaluable to have a friend that you can call with a problem and know they will support you with no judgement
- There is no use stressing over things that are out of your hands - if you have done your due diligence to make sure things go as smoothly as possible, then don’t beat yourself up over honest mistakes out of your control
- We often create more problems in stressful situations than there needs to be - don’t let the stress of the situation compound your anxiety, making you fumble or second guess yourself, making the situation even more difficult
- The one common denominator in all the stressful situations you get in is ‘you' - making a habit of being prepared for situations you know may arise is one way to keep your emotions around stress regulated

We will talk to ourselves in ways we would never talk to people we love and care for—so the question is: can we offer ourselves the same love and care we so easily and readily give to others? – Peter
