Episode 128: Grief Rewrites Us

Peter and Robyne explore the many ways we might create an inverse relationship to grief. If it can seem to destroy us, what does it say about our potential to love? And what does that love say about the very nature of our existence? Plus, an entirely true story of when the dog(s) ate Robyne’s homework.

Show Notes

Highlights:
- Robyne discusses how her dogs chewed up her journal during a once-in-a-lifetime dream interview she got to do on her own podcast, and how it was a worthy sacrifice
- When doing a presentation, you may feel the need to give many brilliant points for your audience to ponder, but sometimes giving one well-supported and important point that people will remember long after can be more powerful
- Grief doesn’t behave like our other emotions - grief rewrites us, and deserves a different degree of reverence
- Robyne is reassured that there is more beyond this plane of existence due to the fact that we are connected to and love people enough that grief exists - there must be more holding this all together beyond our skin, bones, and molecules
- When in the presence of someone who is sharing their grief with you, put away your phone, and do your best to focus in on listening and understanding what they need in that moment. It’s also ok to just say, “I don’t know what to say to you right now because I don’t have experience with this, and I don’t want to get it wrong, but I’m ok to stand with you and stay as long as you need.”

“Grief doesn’t behave like all the other emotions. It deserves this degree of reverence because grief rewrites us, and it never really goes away.” – Robyne
