Episode 37: Hold onto the Humanity
This week, Robyne and Peter explore how much is lost when we feel expected to scrub ourselves of our authenticity and humanity within professional settings and how this sentiment also affects scientific research. Plus, some validation for anyone feeling they need to plan their ‘free time’ these days.

Show Notes
We cover many topics in this episode, including:
- As we grow older, ‘free time’ can become a thing that needs to be planned
- We tend to not appreciate things when we do them every day, so it’s good to add some contrast to our lives and occasionally do things to break our routine
- Part of what creates the trust required for people to open up and have meaningful conversation is a sense that the listener is present, focused and invested in what they have to say
- We are so often put in situations where we are expected to scrub ourselves of our authenticity and humanity to fit a certain professionalism, when those qualities are what make us most interesting
- Scientifically speaking, using quantitative research to judge how people behave is limited in that it often scrubs the humanity out of what could be understood through qualitative research
The way that we’re conditioned to connect with each other at a networking event or at our work, it’s all about scrubbing the humanity and the authenticity out of it, and yet that’s the best stuff. – Peter
