Episode 51: Self-Care vs. Self-Maintenance

On today’s episode, Peter and Robyne discuss the differences between self-care and self-maintenance, how to find balance in satisfying both, and some delightful suggestions for the next time you need to fill your cup.

Today’s surprise questions:
What is a song that you’ve recently discovered that has brought you joy, and explain why it is meaningful to you?
If you had to design a successful day - not necessarily a perfect day - what would that look like, and what is your metric of success?

Show Notes

We cover many topics in this episode, including:
- When creating something, try actually getting into the state you are trying to convey - take on the environment and the mood to inspire the authenticity of your creation
- Research shows that humans benefit from being around nature, and we also need to remember that we are physiologically part of nature
- Being around water has a restorative effect on people
- Self-care is not self-indulgence
- There’s a difference between self-maintenance (the basic requirements to keep you living life well) and self-care (feeding your well-being beyond its basic requirements) - and there is a sweet spot in between that satisfies both
- Examples of ‘maintenance plan’ activities: morning walk, taking breaks throughout the work day every 3 hours, exercise, eating healthy
- Incorporating these maintenance activities daily is not meant to be perfect - it’s a practice
- Leaving a small amount of time between events in your busy schedule can be a form of self-care and self-maintenance, allowing you to catch your breath and enter your next activity focused

This isn’t about perfection. This is about practices. There are practices that we can be doing to help maintain us feeling really well. Robyne
