Episode 56: Social Supports

On today’s episode, Peter and Robyne celebrate the life-giving power of friendship: how to find it, nurture it, and preserve it as we grow older. Plus, strategies to soothe the intimidation of making new friends in adulthood.

Today’s surprise questions:
Who is a person you’d like to reach out to and thank for how much they’ve contributed to your life?
What is something that you’d like to be celebrating when we see each other a week from now?

Show Notes

We cover many topics in this episode, including:
- Humour is a pillar of resiliency
- It’s hard to attempt making new friends as an adult without causing red flags to go off - you need to really put yourself out there
- New friendships are just as valid as ones people have had their whole lives, they are just different
- It’s a good idea to diversify your friendships & social support in different locations, groups, etc., so that you’re not creating an ‘all or nothing’ situation if one social group collapses
- One of the keys to longevity is social connection with friends - people you’re not raising, working with, in a romantic relationship with - just people you have a mutual connection with
- The life expectancy of widowed men tends to be much lower than women - moving forward after their partners death, women are usually able to find camaraderie with other women, whereas men tend to have a difficult time creating new connections, especially later in life
- Tell the people that you love that you love them, deeply and often

What really makes life just feel so beautiful and special is getting to share it. – Peter
