Episode 58: The Overwhelm Threshold

Plus, how our human inclination towards altruism can help bring others back into regulation.

Show Notes

We cover many topics in this episode, including:
- When we stack several bad experiences throughout the day without dealing with the emotional baggage they create, the stack can get so high we touch threshold points where we are no longer able to deal with the weight of it
- When you are having an ‘irrationally’ sensitive moment, that can be an indicator that you have been overstacked and haven’t dealt with events that have built up to this breakdown
- Meet these frustrations with radical compassion, and don’t blame yourself for having hit your limit
- It’s interesting how doing small tasks you don’t particularly like doing for yourself come easier when doing them for someone else who will appreciate your generosity - it fulfills our altruistic need to be of service
- The bedrock of our society is based on community, and a sense of belonging - it’s hardwired into us
- When seeing someone overwhelmed, try asking “What’s one thing I can take off your plate?” - this small task can be significantly meaningful to someone in crisis
- When trying something new, give yourself permission to be uncomfortable, to be the rookie - embrace the messiness of being a beginner, and trust that in time something is going to break through

Some of the greatest gestures, they aren’t that grand, but their effect is pretty significant. – Robyne
