Episode 66: Permission to Play

On today’s In Time, Peter and Robyne explore how “guardrails” can inspire greater calm, increased motivation, and sustainable productivity — and give you permission to play, a key component of ideation and rest. Plus, how to anticipate and avoid “compassion fatigue.”

Today’s surprise question:
Who are you when you are your ‘favourite self’?

Show Notes

We cover many topics in this episode, including:
- It’s important to have guardrails around your time of productivity, while giving yourself permission to rest and play in the times outside of that timeline
- That rest and play is actually key in achieving the things you’ve set out to do, giving you the inspiration and calm to approach them in a new way
- The time you spend on self-care should never involve guilt, when the results of taking this time are beneficial to all involved
- Your ‘best’ self is a checklist of traits you’ve made about yourself from an external perspective, but your ‘favourite’ self is derived internally from your passions and the things you truly enjoy
- When your demands outweigh your resources, you are responding from a place of reactivity - scrambling, not at your best - having more resources than demands allows for creativity, ideation, and connection - there is a false narrative that indicates that you need to sacrifice your resources to be a great leader when fulfilling your demands, but it’s actually counterproductive
- ‘Compassion fatigue’ is when you’ve cared so deeply for something for so long, without caring enough for yourself, that you begin to feel nothing

When we are regulated and well-resourced, we are so much better at fulfilling the roles in our lives. – Robyne
