Episode 121: Present & Curious
Peter and Robyne discuss transitions big and small, from the beginning of a new school year (regardless of where you are in life) to sitting down to work or lacing up your shoes for a workout. How can we set ourselves up for success, honouring the gravity of these occasions and remaining grounded to stay the course? Plus, how can we keep ourselves out of routine to stay present to the joys that can accompany these periods of change?
Today’s surprise question:
What stories come to mind when you think of Alexander Graham Bell, or Wayne Gretzky?

Show Notes
We cover many topics in this episode, including:
- Sept. 1st, and the beginning of the school year marks a renewal similar to New Years - taking stock of the summer, and coming back to the routine of work/school
- The last year of high school before going to university is a special time - you’ve climbed a mountain, with clear laid out goals, and you’re soon to be thrown into the world where you have to figure things out for yourself
- Remind students that life isn’t a race, and that they should always take the time to enjoy where they are right now in life - be present and don’t rush
- Try making a conscious effort during your day to do things slightly differently than you would normally - mixing things up subtly can make you feel more present and curious about your surroundings
- If you’re feeling unmotivated to do a task, try doing some light prep for the task instead, and see if that turns your motivation around (e.g., for a workout, try putting on your running shoes, filling up your water bottle, etc.)
- Some of the best things in life happen when there is an inherent risk involved (not danger) - but getting all the boring things in line first sets you up to be more confident in taking risks
The better we are at our lives, the more mastery we’ve experienced, the more we’re going to spend on autopilot to the point where we’re not even really paying attention anymore. – Robyne
