Episode 105: Split Attention and Middle Ground
On a new In Time, Peter and Robyne share strategies for prioritizing projects (and avoiding the zero-sum game of split attention), creating a “middle ground” that allows us to pace projects and avoid overwhelm, and weather those inevitable storms. Plus, how to recognize and accommodate the biased lens of our personal experience.

Show Notes
We cover many topics in this episode, including:
- We often feel a pressure to either deal with our stressors immediately, or brush them under the rug to avoid dealing with them, but there needs to be a middle ground where we can put them away temporarily with a promise to eventually bring them out again to deal with them
- There’s a 'space and a place' to allow ourselves to digest emotion, and to properly give it the attention it needs
- You can split your attention and multi-task between several things with none of them getting your best, or you can put parameters around your main objective and choose which items are your priority, and which ones can be put on the shelf to deal with at a later time
- Often when we think about ‘overwhelm’, we are overestimating how difficult things are, and underestimating our capability to deal with them
- We are always looking through a lens - a bias based on what we’ve experienced - so it’s always good to analyze that lens and make sure it includes the whole picture
- You cannot see your reflection in boiling water - you must wait for emotions and situations to settle down before you can truly see them and yourself for what they are
- Sometimes ripping apart a creative routine you’re in and starting fresh and help you relearn how to present your ideas in a different way, and you can always go back to the original way knowing that you tried every option to find the best one
- Wherever you’re at in your own progress, it’s ultimately just about your willingness to be in the process, and to be curious, and to trust in the progression
Whatever level you’re at, wherever you’re at in your own progress or process, it’s about just being willing to be in the process and remain curious. – Peter
