Episode 106: The Skill of Saying “No”
Peter and Robyne discuss the how, when, and why of saying “no.” When is it a healthy boundary? When is it a deflection to avoid a challenging (but enriching) experience? And when is it something else entirely? Plus, the joy of rituals shared between generations.

Show Notes
We cover many topics in this episode, including:
- When raising kids, days are long, but years are short, so be sure to appreciate how special having them around is, even amongst the chaos of our lives
- Peter tells about the importance some parents find in keeping rituals alive with their kids as they become adults, and staying in regular communication with them
- It’s often more difficult to say ‘no’ to something you’re not comfortable doing than it is to do the thing, and there is value in learning the skill of saying ‘no’ when it feels right
- There is a fine line between saying ‘no’ to a new experience because it crosses a line for you, or just because you feel intimidated by it - don’t default to ’no’ just to avoid new experiences and the potential to learn something new
- We know our own BS when we are avoiding doing a task, but we should also give ourselves permission from time to time to rest and allow ourselves to be tender to ourselves
- If you decide to stay in bed instead of doing something productive, make sure you don’t make yourself feel bad about doing it, or else it takes away the joy of the whole thing
Sometimes it takes as much courage to say no as it does to say yes. – Peter
