Episode 78: The 90-Second Window

Peter and Robyne explore the ways in which we’re influenced by our environments, and how choosing where we address certain tasks can set us up for success. Plus, using a 90-second window framework to honour our reactive brains while creating space for grounded communication and smoother resolutions.

Today’s surprise question:
Is there a space that fills you with good feelings/thoughts (a sense of home, creativity, etc.)?

Show Notes

We cover many topics in this episode, including:
- When you’re in the right environment, things flow easier - avoid being around environments that are disorganized, cluttered, frustrating to access the things you need - these environments will deplete your energy
- Students are more likely to do better on an exam when they take it in the same environment they were in when they studied
- Be aware that we have different ways of experiencing our environments, so allow people to find the ease and structure they need to elevate themselves into feeling more resourced
- In arguments or when important information is shared, there is a 90-second window after you’ve said something where out of fear, people will give a reactionary response, and aren’t able to listen or understand what you’re actually saying - after 90 seconds the brain is able to recalibrate and will then allows them to listen again
- For parenting, you can use this 90-second technique to allow a child who has just lied about something to have a moment to rethink that decision and restate the truth
- Another tactic to use in this situation, when things have gone completely off the rails, is to do a 'hard interrupt', and say "I’m not going to hold what you just said against you, but I want you to go out of the room, come in, and try again”.

Wherever we can find moments of ease and structure that help elevate us to a place where we feel more resourced, I think it sets us up for success. – Robyne
