Episode 23: How to Best Support Others (and Ourselves)
In this episode, Robyne and Peter discuss ways in which we can most effectively comfort and offer support to those in our lives experiencing loss or feeling overwhelmed. Plus, they highlight the value in being present in the moment as best we can, and what pairing that with vulnerability can bring us.
Today’s surprise question:
What is something that you can put on your plate over the next 24 hours that is restorative?

Show Notes
We cover many topics in this episode, including:
- When comforting someone over the loss of a loved one, instead of just saying ‘sorry for your loss’, try asking them if they’d like to share something about that person
- Try asking people who look overwhelmed, “What’s one thing that I can take off your plate right now? Give me one job.”
- Live in the moment, day by day, as best as you’re able to
- We've become quite transactional with people, and often don’t allow ourselves the time to engage with others day to day beyond a surface level
- It hurts to share your vulnerability with someone and not have it be received - we remember this feeling in future interactions
- It’s important to have moments in your life when you are ‘mono-tasking’, allowing your brain to exhale
- Doing a task that aligns with your values can rejuvenate your energy
- When feeling the need for self-care, ask yourself “What do I need right now?”
- Allow yourself to feel your feelings to completion, otherwise they can build up
When our days get quite full and we lose some of our momentum to do some of those practices around self-care, I think what’s really important is to really just be honest with ourselves and ask ourselves, ‘What is it that I need right now?’ – Robyne
