Episode 20: Self-Awareness vs. Self-Criticizing

On this episode of In Time, Peter and Robyne unpack the discomfort in talking about our own privilege and abundance, and how the shame it can conjure can also impact our ability to step into our greatness. They also remind us to practise self-compassion and kindness when discovering and unearthing new things about ourselves and offer helpful tools for how to make invisible knowledge of ourselves visible, and how to come to a place of appreciation for the new knowledge you have acquired and now have in your awareness.

Today’s surprise question:
If you were to design a day of rest and recovery, what would your day look like?

Show Notes

We cover many topics in this episode, including:
- We often find it difficult to talk about our own privilege and abundance - a level of shame, or ungratefulness if we aren’t appreciating every moment of our success
- Humility is just as disingenuous as being arrogant
- We are often more ashamed and afraid to step into our greatness than we are admitting our failures
- Our society’s avoidance of talking honestly about our finances and our relationship with money is actually depriving our younger generations of all our fiscal knowledge
- When discovering and unearthing new things about yourself, remember to meet these vulnerabilities with deep kindness and compassion, knowing that you are doing the best you can with what you’ve been given
- Topics that cause discomfort to discuss are often indicating areas of fear that need to be worked through
- The first place to start on your journey of self-awareness is to just have a moment of appreciation for any new knowledge you have acquired and now have in your awareness
- Free-flow writing on an issue or creative project you are sorting out is a great way to start making any invisible knowledge you have visible, allowing you to gain clarity on the subject

Shame isn’t a very good teacher. It doesn’t change our behaviour; it just holds us back from our potential. – Robyne

- Quote Peter referred to: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” – Marianne Williamson
